Life & Arts Beep Beep keeps show short and sweet By Dusti Rhodes
Rock 'em and leave 'em -- especially when you're young. This seemed to be the mentality behind Omaha's Beep Beep on Saturday night at Fat Cat's, 4216 Washington Ave. The band nearly raced through its set and was off in less than hour, seemingly much too soon for fans of a band that is doing more than most of its kind to revitalize a post-punk sound in a pop punk/hardcore time. The group didn't spend much time on stage and did not return for an encore, and fans weren't asking them to -- a surprise considering that the audience seemed to be with the group for the entire performance. But as soon as Beep Beep left the stage the audience began leaving the club -- perhaps less was enough. Fans of the group's release Business Casual got to hear a good chunk of the album performed live, mostly because the band has no other releases to date. Although Beep Beep did play a new song for the crowd, it kept them captivated by their ability to recreate a rather technical album in a live setting.
Beep Beep played a show short enough to keep audiences satisfied but not wanting more Friday night at Fat Cat's. The band seemed to keep audience members' attention with its fierce live performance, but pleased them enough so there was no need to ask for more. Tori Hoover The Daily Cougar Guitarists/vocalists Eric Bemberger and Chris Hughes were able to deliver their biting vocals and riffs with as much precision live as heard on Casual. While many might not enjoy hearing an almost identical sound in concert that they could hear on the album, the madness of Beep Beep helps the group offer audiences something that they will experience when the band is standing right in front of them. As the group finished their second song for the night, "Oh No," the audience members were already being brought back from the blank stares that most had on their faces after the opening act Ex Models turned over the stage. Those who were unable to catch the guys on this Houston stop should keep their eyes open as Beep Beep is touring relentlessly through the states, and there is a good chance they will be back again soon. Preceding Beep Beep were their pals for this tour, Ex Models. These guys either have never heard of Nels Cline or listen to Nels Cline too much. The band preyed on the audience with repetitious chords and unintelligible shouts that some would call music, but others, including Cline, might call nonsense. Animals of the Bible from San Antonio opened the evening and no doubt satisfied fans who miss At The Drive-In enough to settle for a poor substitute. Beep Beep, Ex Models, Animals of the Bible @ Fat Cat's, 4216 Washington Verdict: Less was enough -- this time. Send comments to dcshobiz@mail.uh.edu |
