Sports Lady Cougars outfight Tigers in home blowout Houston shows dominance over Memphis with career-high 15 points from freshman By Arica Jefferson
The Lady Cougars pounced on the Memphis Lady Tigers in the 74-45 victory Monday at Hofheinz Pavilion, which makes the ladies 7-2 in Conference USA play and 17-5 for the season. The ladies just came off the win against Saint Louis, were they handed them the greatest point margin of the season, 92-47. Memphis (10-13, 3-7) jumped out to a 6-4 lead, but after senior center Sancho Lyttle hit a turnaround jumper to tie the game, the Lady Tigers would never again have the lead. The win leaves UH head coach Joe Curl looking up despite a streaky season for the Lady Cougars.
Freshman forward Kadi Creel led the Lady Cougars with 15 points in Tuesday's 74-45 victory over the Memphis Lady Tigers. Coby JamesThe Daily Cougar "We would like to be more streaky on the way up ... knock off another nine in a row or whatever we need to do, but I am really proud of this team," Curl said. With ten minutes left in the half, UH had all the momentum. A strong series of rebounds and putbacks by senior forward Daphne Andre, who had 14 points, was followed by a three-pointer by freshman forward Kadi Creel, who lead all scorers with a career-high 15 points. "I have been concentrating on trying to be more aggressive offensively," Creel said. "In practice and in the games my teammates and coaches are always telling me to shoot and now when I'm out there I'm not timid anymore." The second half started off just as the first half ended, with UH dominating in the post. Lyttle, who scored 13 points for the game, caught a pass off the backboard by senior point guard Joanne Overstreet. Junior forward Emily Fryters, contributing to a 12-4 run, said scoring is not her top priority, but she is glad to do what she can whenever she is needed. "When I get on the court I just want to do whatever I can; take a charge, make two points," Fryters, who had a career high nine points, said. The energy from the Lady Cougars dwindled a bit when Memphis tried to give them a dose of their own medicine by trapping in the half court, and Curl sent his backups into the game. They responded by leading UH to 43-17 advantage in bench points. The ladies travel to Chicago Friday to take on DePaul,
an important game for the Lady Cougars. The next home game for the ladies
is Feb. 18 against East Carolina.
