Sports Cougars win six at Hyatt Invitational By Cole Gardner The Cougars hosted the Hyatt Regency Invitational on Saturday at the Yeoman Field House, and most of their success came around the track this week. Five out of the Cougars' six wins came in the running events, despite the fact that many of their athletes were out for rest and preparation for important future meets. Among the winners, junior Alicia Cave won the preliminary 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.51 seconds. She would later go on in the finals to qualify provisionally for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 8.41 seconds. Also on the women's team, sophomore LaDedra Guy won the 200-meter dash, scoring a time of 24.75 seconds. On the men's side of the running events, senior Stanford Routt won the 200-meter, his second win in the event and his third win overall this season. Last season, Sesar Figueroa put himself in UH's all-time men's indoor mile runners when he ran a time of 4:07.06. Saturday, he won the men's 1,000 meter. Also on the men's side, Houston came away with a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:20.01. In the field, senior Brandon Bray won the men's long jump with a distance of 23 feet 10 inches. In 2001, Bray reached his indoor best of 24-2 1/2. Tom Rusteburg and Tristian Whitley both finished atop the collegiate competitors in the men's pole vault and high jump respectively, each finishing third overall. Rusteburg cleared 4.90 meters in the pole vault and Whitley cleared 2.08 meters in the high jump. Some of the Cougars head up to Fayetteville, Ark.,
on Friday for the Arkansas Tyson Invitational to be held Friday and Saturday
while the others will be staying at home to compete in the UH/Runsport
All-Comers Meet Saturday at the Yeoman Field House.
