Mates plus one make Houston stop tonight

They may not be bringing everything but the kitchen sink, but they are bringing their baby.

Mates of State stop at Fat Cat's, 4216 Washington Ave. tonight, the first date of their tour supporting their recently released four-song EP All Day. Coming along for their ride is the couple's daughter born just after their tour in October and November.

Drummer Jason Hammel said that he and keyboardist Kori Gardner discussed the possibility of touring with the baby and decided to do it.

"We just kind of planned ahead and said, ‘OK, where is the baby going to be when we are doing this? Where is she when we are doing sound check?'" Hammel said. Hammel added that the two had decided to bring a nanny with them on the tour.

The two toured during Kori's pregnancy and recorded All Day in order to have new material to play for audiences.

"We just wanted to have something out to tour with and with an EP you can just throw a couple songs together and it doesn't have to be as coherent," Hammel said.

The difference between the past releases and All Day, Hammel said, is that this time the pair was less concerned with what the songs would sound like live and focused more on exploring what they could do in the studio.

Hammel said a lot of what may be missed live could be filled by turning up the volume. Find out if he is right tonight. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the show starts at 8:45.
