Life & Arts Reliant K brings love to H-town By Zach Lee
"Now I'm sunny with a high of 75 since you took my heavy heart and made it light." That's what Relient K says in "High of 75" on their latest album, Mmhmm. It's emo like nothing else, and it's the kind of sentiment that's just perfect for Valentine's Day. Friday, Relient K will be playing at Meridian (1503 Chartres St.), and their sappy emotional lyrics and pop-punk/emo sound is just the thing to get every emo kid in the city pumped up about Valentine's Day -- whether to spend it cuddling with a favorite hug buddy or to writing in a Live Journal about how much heartbreak comes with being a fan of simple and meaningless music. Just think, what better way is there to woo a prospective lover than to be with them when they hear "More Than Useless" with words like "And sometimes I think that I'm not any good at all / And sometimes I wonder why, why I'm even here at all / But then you assure me." A candy heart couldn't have said it better. With song titles like "The Only Thing Worse Than Beating a Dead Horse Is Betting on One" and "My Girl's Ex-Boyfriend," Relient K is sure to stir up some crazy mosh pits of love. The fact that their chord progressions are just like every other emo band's just makes for more fun. With all the emo kids gone, the rest of us can enjoy
a weekend free from the annoying sound of the fragile beats of too many
broken hearts. After all, a bag of cheap Valentine's Day candy is better
than watching guys wallow in self-pity they should have grown out of in
middle school.
