News Gogue honored in gala Saturday Celebration reflects longstanding UH, Delphian rapport By Jessica Robertson
In nearly a year-and-a-half since she arrived in Houston, Susie Gogue has worked to bridge gaps between the community and the University -- and Saturday, she was recognized for that work. The Houston Assembly of Delphian Chapters honored Gogue, wife of UH President Jay Gogue, for her community service. She is a member of the Houston Grand Opera board, the Foundation Board of Kappa Kappa Gamma, the UT Health Science Center School of Nursing Partners Board and the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary. "I like to be part of things that directly benefit the people of the city," Gogue said. The Delphians, founded in 1924, are one of the oldest women's clubs in the city. Gogue became acquainted with the group when she held a brunch for its members. "(The honor) was kind of a way we could thank her for her participation with us," said Margaret Bock, former assembly president, trustee of the Delphian Scholarship Foundation Fund and liaison to UH. Saturday's gala, held at the Sheraton Brookhollow hotel, included dinner, dancing, prizes, a silent auction benefiting scholarships and live music from the Ed Gerlach Band, which has been associated with the University for decades. "He plays the kind of music that our group enjoys, and I think the Gogues enjoyed it also," Bock said. Gogue, however, said her favorite part of the evening was spending time with the women of the Delphian organization. "Each one is so genuine, warm and caring," Gogue said. "They're really interested in educating the next group of leaders of Houston." The Delphian organization has a long-standing relationship with UH in giving scholarships, Bock said. The group gave UH its first scholarship in 1930 and has continued to fund undergraduate scholarships since then. "I just think they're the most amazing organization,"
Gogue said.
