Provost forum for Gonzalez today at Hilton

Cougar News Staff

Gerardo Gonzalez, an education dean at Indiana University and a pioneer in alcohol abuse prevention among college students, will discuss his career and take questions from the UH community today as a candidate for provost.

Gonzalez is the second of five UH provost candidates to visit the campus this month.

He founded the nonprofit corporation Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students, a national peer education program, in 1977 while he was a doctoral candidate in educational counseling and personnel administration at the University of Florida.

Gonzalez served as president and CEO of BACCHUS, based at UF, until 1986. Between then and 2000, he held various positions in the university's College of Education, teaching and heading the Department of Counselor Education.

In 1993, he became the college's associate dean for administration and finance, the chief deputy to the education dean. Gonzalez took a deanship on an interim basis in 1999 and became the dean of Indiana University's School of Education in 2000, the position he holds today.

As head of IU's education school, Gonzalez is responsible for operations at the university's Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses, and he provides oversight for IU's six regional campuses.

The hour-long open forum with Gonzalez will give him time to discuss his career and accomplishments and will leave a period for questions from the audience. The entire campus community is invited to attend; the forum will begin at 3:15 p.m. today in the University Hilton's Waldorf Astoria Room.
