Sports 'Nothing 2 Prove' a force to reckon with in league By Jeff Williams
Intramural sports at UH are in full effect. Basketball starts its second week and is proving to be an easy week for one of the women's teams. Whether you know them as "Nothing 2 Prove" or "Shake 'em Off," this year's team plans to hold up the legacy. The team is comprised of graduate student Terrolyn Gunter, seniors Heather Lawrence and Tyawna Jamison, sophomore Jennifer Smith and freshman Sha Givens. They make up this year's "Fab Five" for the women's Comets league. "This is just a forecast of things to come," Jamison said. "We're going whatever (wins) and zero (losses)." Strong words after just inching past team Lady Lions with a five-point victory and not leading until late in the second half. "We weren't playing our game (at first)," Lawrence said. Lawrence took charge of the game as a point guard and led her team to an 8-0 coming out after being down at the half. She knocked down two consecutive three-point shots while Jamison added another. They had the Lady Lions on the ropes. Gibson and Gunter played physical ball, banging out boards and getting baskets and fouls. But time was ticking down for the defending champs. Lawrence kept encouraging her teammates to shoot the ball, including Jennifer Smith. Smith, who had missed her last couple of shots, spotted up for a three and managed to put her team up by one point with 53 seconds left on the clock. "I was thinking my shot is off today," Smith said. "I usually shoot better than that." The Lady Lions fell in the end after missing five consecutive free throws. "It's going really well, we really like it," Lawrence said about their intramural playing. Jamison was glad about the win and predicted many more. "We changed the name to ‘Nothing 2 Prove' (this year) because we have nothing to prove," she said. "We won this thing three years in a row and we plan to do it again." Freshman Gibson is soaking in the game and knowledge from her fellow teammates. "It's a privilege to play with these upper-classmen, because they have won since I was in high school," Gibson said. "I'm going to have to keep the legacy going next year." These girls play at 6:30 p.m. every Sunday at the
Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Next week, they play the 0-2 Phi
Mu team.
