Panel to discuss fate of Saddam

Law Center hosts expert council on international law

By Mandie Burnett
The Daily Cougar

The UH Law Center will look at the coming trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein in a pair of panel discussions next week.

The first discussion will take a critical look at the domestic tribunal and address controversial issues surrounding the trial, while the second will talk about America's ability to sue Saddam.

International law professor Jordan J. Paust will moderate the discussions.

"International experts will address jurisdictional and due process issues concerning what might be the trial of the century with respect to alleged genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, as well as issues concerning the right of former U.S. prisoners of war and others to sue and collect judgments against Saddam," Paust said in a release. "These are issues raising concerns about accountability and an independent judiciary in the United States."

The panelists will be Madeleine Morris of Duke University, Diane Marie Amann of the University of California, Los Angeles and UC-Davis; John Norton Moore of the University of Virginia; and David P. Stewart of the U.S. Department of State.

The event is free to all students and faculty members; the registration fee for the public will be $75.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Law Center. For more information, call (713) 743-2201.
