News UH student's clothing line lets
young designers
By Laci Burke
The person sitting next to you could be wearing a shirt you designed, thanks to a UH student's new clothing design company, Engines of Elk. Management and entrepreneurship senior Tyler Brockington launched the company in October to give young designers an outlet for their creativity. The company is inviting designers to submit their designs online, and visitors to the EoE Web site (www.enginesofelk.com) will vote for the most stylish ideas.
Designs like this are submitted to the Engines of Elk Web site, where users pick the concepts they feel should be put into production. Carolyn Dunn/The Daily Cougar The company will then produce and sell the clothes. Once a class project, Engines of Elk is now in its first stage of production, selling hooded sweatshirts and wristbands to raise money for the first line of clothing, set for release this spring. "The wristbands represent the motto of the company, ‘fuel individuality.' All proceeds go into helping fund the company and people who support the idea of Engines of Elk," Brockington said. Designers chosen online will receive a portion of the profits from their clothes and exposure in fueling a movement Brockington said is giving people the chance to do something different. "It's more than clothing -- it's the feeling," he said. As for the company's name, Brockington said he chose it by incorporating specific ideals. "I wanted to name my company something that was very driven and progressive, and to many people's dismay, the elk is just under a cheetah in speed. So the engine of an elk is very fast and always progressing ... just like what I want to do with the company," Brockington said. EoE will have its next sample showcase March 24 at the Ruby Room, 509 Main St. Plans are also under way for similar shows in Dallas and Los Angeles. The company is also accepting design submissions
for future clothing lines. For more information, visit www.enginesofelk.com/submit.html.
