News UCW to promote lactation rooms Group plans changes to staff scholarships By Jessica Robertson
Promoting scholarships and publicizing the campus's new lactation rooms were the primary focus of the University Commission on Women's meeting Monday. Two lactation rooms, one located in the Office of Affirmative Action in Student Service Center 2 and another in the Women's Resource Center, opened in January. Each room provides students, faculty and staff a quiet environment to nurse or express breast milk. Although no one has used the lactation room in the WRC yet, Executive Director of Affirmative Action Abel Garza said the room in SS2 has been used between 20 and 25 times. "I know no one's asked about numbers, but (the lactation room in SS2) is being used as we speak," Garza said. The commission discussed ways to publicize the lactation rooms to students, including adding information to orientation materials and the Student Handbook. UCW co-chairwoman Sara McNeil emphasized the importance of making students aware of the rooms and noted the absence of the Student Government Association's appointed student representatives during UCW meetings. "I know it's hard for students (with classes) to come in the daytime, but we need students' input," McNeil said. The commission also discussed proposed changes to its annual staff scholarships, which are provided for one three-hour course to benefit eligible UH staff. Joe Papick, president of the Staff Council, said that although it has not been determined that the UCW's allocated funds are best being used by scholarships, the commission does not have enough information to radically change its scholarship program this year. The commission voted to provide 12 scholarships at a flat fee of $500 a semester, which can be used for tuition, books or fees. Members of the commission expressed concern that recipients complete coursework and discussed a provision that would allow a review of course progress. The commission will meet March 29.
