Cougars down two in Silver Glove Series

Houston falls to Rice again in 10th-inning loss

Cougar Sports Services

The Houston Cougar baseball team is down 0-2 in the Sterling Silver Bank Series after dropping another one-run extra-inning game to cross town rival Rice Owls.

In a similar scenario from game one, the Owls came through in the 10th frame, this time on the Adam Rodgers RBI-single that brought home pinch runner Matt Moake to give the Owls a 4-3 victory.

The Cougars took their first lead of the game scoring a pair of runs in the fifth inning on an error bringing home Bryan Pounds and an RBI-single from Tully, giving his team a 2-1 advantage.

Junior pitcher Kevin Roberts gave a strong performance in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to Rice, giving up four hits, one run and striking out five Owls in seven innings of work.

Roberts then helped his own cause in the sixth as he drove home outfielder Mark McGonigle from second with a center field RBI-single.

UH starter Kevin Roberts put out a strong seven innings, scattering four hits with one run and five strikeouts, leaving the game with a 3-1 lead.

With Roberts out, the wheels came off in the eighth inning as the Owls took advantage of two Cougar errors, tying the game at 3-3.

Rice reliever Bryce Cox (1-0) picked up the win after a scoreless 10th inning, while Cougar reliever Shea Hancock (0-1) took the loss after giving up one run on two hits in the inning.

Junior outfielder Travis Tully was at the helm of the attack for the Cougars, going 2-4 with a RBI in the loss. Sophomore outfielder Jake Stewart's six-game hitting streak was snapped as he went 0-for-5 with an RBI in the contest.

Houston is 2-6 on the season and will host Baseball America College No. 2 Louisiana State in a three-game series at Cougar Field. Play starts at 7 p.m. Friday.
