Sports Cougars down two in Silver Glove Series Houston falls to Rice again in 10th-inning loss Cougar Sports Services The Houston Cougar baseball team is down 0-2 in the Sterling Silver Bank Series after dropping another one-run extra-inning game to cross town rival Rice Owls. In a similar scenario from game one, the Owls came through in the 10th frame, this time on the Adam Rodgers RBI-single that brought home pinch runner Matt Moake to give the Owls a 4-3 victory. The Cougars took their first lead of the game scoring a pair of runs in the fifth inning on an error bringing home Bryan Pounds and an RBI-single from Tully, giving his team a 2-1 advantage.
Junior pitcher Kevin Roberts gave a strong performance in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to Rice, giving up four hits, one run and striking out five Owls in seven innings of work. Stephen Pinchback/The Daily Cougar Roberts then helped his own cause in the sixth as he drove home outfielder Mark McGonigle from second with a center field RBI-single. UH starter Kevin Roberts put out a strong seven innings, scattering four hits with one run and five strikeouts, leaving the game with a 3-1 lead. With Roberts out, the wheels came off in the eighth inning as the Owls took advantage of two Cougar errors, tying the game at 3-3. Rice reliever Bryce Cox (1-0) picked up the win after a scoreless 10th inning, while Cougar reliever Shea Hancock (0-1) took the loss after giving up one run on two hits in the inning. Junior outfielder Travis Tully was at the helm of the attack for the Cougars, going 2-4 with a RBI in the loss. Sophomore outfielder Jake Stewart's six-game hitting streak was snapped as he went 0-for-5 with an RBI in the contest. Houston is 2-6 on the season and will host Baseball
America College No. 2 Louisiana State in a three-game series at Cougar
Field. Play starts at 7 p.m. Friday.
