UH to host C-USA swimming, diving tournament

Cougar Sports Services

Swimming and diving fans will have the opportunity this week to see some of the country's top aquatic athletes at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium for the 2005 Conference USA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship and Men's Invitational.

This marks the second consecutive year UH will host the event and the first C-USA school to host the event. In previous years, the event was held in Indianapolis, Ind.

Last season, the Cougars had their best finish in program history with a third-place victory. The Cougars also dominated postseason awards with Azul Almazan named Diver of the Meet, Anna Kiess honored as Freshman Diver of the Year and Cougar diving head coach Jane Figueiredo named the Diving Coach of the Year.

This year, Almazan, Kiess and Figueiredo along with junior diver Stephanie Mannella and sophomore Rachel Gitelson will vie for the top spots again.

Senior captain Kristin Bay and sophomore Szintia Szanto will take on C-USA swimmers. Bay currently holds the fastest Cougar times in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

Holding UH's all-time fastest records in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly and 200- and 400-yard individual medley, Szanto will look for the conference title in all four events.

Action begins today at 1 p.m. with the men's one-meter diving followed at 6 p.m. with finals for the 200-yard freestyle relay, one-meter diving and 800-yard freestyle relay. The schedule for Thursday through Saturday's events can be found on the swimming and diving web page at www.UHCougars.com under the C-USA Championship link.

Tickets are sold 90 minutes prior to the first event. Single day tickets for students are $5, and $10 for all four days' tickets. Adult prices are $10 for single day passes and $25 for the four-day event.
