50 file for SGA candidacy

Despite last-minute flurry, Zelaya remains unopposed
in bid for presidency

Cougar News Staff

Fifty students filed Tuesday for the 30 Student Government Association Senate seats, 14 of which will be unopposed for the 2006 SGA Senate general elections beginning Wednesday.

The Election Commission will confirm by 6 p.m. today whether the candidates meet the qualifications to run for the positions, and it will post an official list during the candidate seminar at 6 p.m. today in the University Center Caribbean Room.

If he meets all qualifications, Francisco Zelaya, current SGA vice president, will run unopposed for the SGA presidency.

Other seats going unopposed include the Student Regent seat, two from the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, two from the College of Education, one at-large seat, the College of Architecture seat, two from the Bauer College of Business, the College of Social Work seat and the Honors College seat.

Zelaya's UH4U is the only political party running in this year's election; the rest of the candidates filed as independents, Zelaya said.

The seminar today is a mandatory meeting and candidates must inform

the Election Commission within 24 hours of the meeting, which was 6 p.m. Tuesday, if they cannot attend.

During the seminar, the Election Commission will review with candidates the rules and regulations of the campaign process.

The deadline for filing for candidacy ended at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The SGA Senate voted during its Feb. 22 meeting to extend the deadline after Election Commissioner Glory Ngwolo expressed her concern that many students may not have been aware of the deadline.

The general election begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday and ends at 8 p.m. March 9.

The election results will be announced and posted at noon, March 10 in the UC Underground World Affairs Lounge.

The Daily Cougar will run an official list of the candidates in Friday's issue; the Election Commission finalizes the ballot on Thursday.
