Sports UH comes out on top at Intercollegiate Classic Three Houston players finish under par by JONG LEE
The Houston Cougars took the field Monday and Tuesday at the Cypresswood Golf Club to host the All-American Intercollegiate. Houston blew past the competitors by 13 strokes, finishing 11 under par, as the only team finishing under par for the tournament. The next closest team was the University of Colorado, who finished 2-over par 866. Only nine players in the tournament finished under par. Four players, led by junior Ricky Romano, finished third, shooting a 69 for the day. Romano finished the competition six-under 210. Senior Zach Mowbray and sophomore Jordan Irwin finished the competition fifth and sixth respectively. Mowbray came away with a 74 in the final round, ending the tournament with a three-under 213. Irwin, who out shot Mowbray in round three 70-74, just missed tying his teammate. Irwin finished two-under 214. Junior Pablo Acuna tied for 12th, with a 2-over 218. University of Colorado, Middle Tennessee State, University of Kansas, University of Texas-Arlington, University of Memphis, University of Southern Louisiana, Louisiana-Lafayette, Jacksonville State, University of North Texas, Louisiana Tech University, Arkansas-Little Rock and University of Wyoming were all invited to take part in the two-day tournament. Houston finished off the first day at the top of the leader board. The Cougars concluded the morning with a score of 284 and improved in the latter parts of the day, with a score of 282. Houston ended the first day at 10-under-par 566, seven strokes ahead of Colorado. Mowbray ended Monday with a third place finish at 5-under-par 139. Four golfers were tied for fourth, including Houston's Romano. Acuna and Irwin tied for 10th at 144. The rest of the top ten fell in line; Memphis posted 584, Louisiana-Lafayette scored 587, Middle Tennessee scored 588, Southeastern Louisiana had 589, Texas-Arlington finished Monday seventh with 592, Jacksonville State posted a 595 and Louisiana Tech was at a distant 10th with 609. The Cougars were able to dominate the Intercollegiate Classic, which has not been played in five years. Golf head coach Vince Jarrett made a priority to reinstate the All-American Intercollegiate when he was hired. On Monday, Houston will continue its season at the
Louisiana Classic which will be hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette. Louisiana-Lafayette
finished 8th with 22-over-par 886.
