Life & Arts Hip Pub Fiction caters all partygoers Bottom's Up Sarah Tressler If you've been banging your head against a wall in anticipation of Spring Break, you may want to seek liquid solace for your throbbin' noggin. For this purpose, we turn our attention to Pub Fiction, a midtown haven for those in search of social lubrication and friendly interaction. This sports bar/live music venue/night club opened in May of last year and has been at the height of popularity for people in the nightclub social circle ever since. Close to 40 televisions are scattered around to keep sports fans happy. Many are high definition, and one is taller than I am, making it easy to see if Yao Ming is, once again, saving the Houston Rockets from the clutches of the Los Angeles Lakers. If you would rather be in the game than just watch it, you can test your skills at darts or practice your pool hustling, both of which are available for your playing pleasure. A live band performs on a stage by the back patio on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Musical flavors range from alternative to Texas country to an '80s cover band. Saturdays are reserved for a DJ. On Friday and Saturday nights, Pub Fiction gets packed to the gills with inner city urban dwellers and outer loopers alike. Get there early or risk standing in a long line outside waiting for the capacity nazis to let people in. This is one club that strictly enforces the capacity limit, so it's not uncommon to see 20-30 well-dressed club-goers standing in the rain, cold or humidity waiting for people to leave so they can gain entrance. You might want to check out its martini capabilities on a weeknight, when the bartenders aren't slammed with orders. I would suggest the Key Lime Pie Martini; it's vanilla vodka, sweet and sour and lime juice shaken with ice and strained into a graham cracker crusted martini glass. Also available are a Caramel Appletini and a Rootini -- that's root beer, vanilla vodka and a splash of cream served in a martini glass and topped with whipped cream and a cherry. It's basically an alcoholic root beer float, which will definitely get Spring Break off to a nostalgic start. If you're more of a beer person (this is a pub, after all), you can choose from 12 beers on tap or 34 different kinds of bottled beer. The venue's wine list is puny but adequate for a sports bar, and its kitchen offers up standard bar fare like hot wings, hamburgers and sandwiches. My suggestion: Check out of your last class early and round up your friends for a round at Pub Fiction. Face it: Spring Break started the moment you began reading this column.
