Speak now ... An article in Saturday's Houston Chronicle noted an increase in the number of students applying for financial aid this year at area colleges and universities. Rising tuition was the main reason cited for the increase in applicants; a UH student was quoted in the story speaking about familiar financial woes. It wouldn't be hard to find other UH students who agree with him, who also worry about having enough money to finish school. But the trouble is that, although many enrolled at UH can relate to the problems expressed by this student, their voices are not being heard when it counts. And it's not the administration that's to blame. The Designated Tuition Review Committee met twice in the spring semester to discuss an increase in tuition and fees, and to allow students to share their opinions on the matter. Unfortunately, only a handful of students was present, and two of them were Daily Cougar staff members reporting on the meetings. The question is, where were you? The only way a committee can be aware of unrest among students is if the students take the podium and speak up. It's obvious that students are not ashamed or afraid to voice their opinions about the state of UH to outsiders, so why not share them with the people who have the power to change things? The good news is, it's never too late. Although no meetings are currently scheduled and probably won't be until it's time to address another rise in tuition or fees, students can e-mail UH President Jay Gogue at jgogue@uh.edu or Student Government Association President Jon Quintanilla at sga_president@uh.edu with comments, complaints or criticism. Students must let leaders know that whatever problems
the University may face, they are not the result of complacency.
