Meters at UC face removal

Decision would ease access for emergency vehicles, Irwin says

Members of the Parking and Transportation Advisory Committee said Thursday that students, faculty and staff should be notified before parking meters are removed in front of the University Center.

The meters will be removed to provide easier access to the UC for emergency vehicles and to "spruce up" the appearance of University Drive, Associate Vice President for Plant Operations Dave Irwin said.

No date was set for the removal of the meters.

"The reason students are upset is the lack of transition," Student Government Association Vice President Francisco Zaleya said. "I'm not saying don't remove the meters. I'm saying do it the right way."

Parking meters were removed from the front of the University Hilton and the UC without any notification in January.

"It was a mistake that we took them all out." Irwin said. "That shouldn't have happened."

The UC meters were replaced. The UH Hilton Hotel meters were permanently removed to provide drop-off and pick-up access for hotel guests.

The committee also approved a recommendation for a 4 percent increase in the price for parking permits. The increase will not affect garage permit prices.

The committee's recommendations will be sent to Vice President of Administration and Finance John Rudley for consideration.
