Report card now, Spring Break later SGA: F After all the problems with the Student Government Association elections this year, a simple extension of the voting to the Friday before Spring Break is not enough. Fewer students are on campus on Fridays, and the break is a good excuse to skip class today for those who would usually be here. Many students weren't even aware an election was taking place. The SGA should work to make itself highly visible to the campus community, and it doesn't seem to have done so this semester. Criticism of the Senate is not necessarily meant as a personal attack on any of the students involved -- most of SGA officers likely have good intentions and work hard to juggle legislative duties and academics. Good intentions, however, are often not enough to get students involved, and the next administration will have some work to do if it wants to rekindle interest in UH's student government. World Baseball Classic: B If you're not a baseball fan, you probably don't care about the tournament that pits 16 countries against one another to determine a world champion. But even American fans don't seem too jazzed, not to mention team owners who are haunted by visions of star players suffering injuries before the American major league season starts. And how does God reward cynicism? By making your country's baseball team lose to Canada. Even those who don't know the difference between a sinker and a sac fly should at least appreciate the tournament's ability to unite more than a dozen countries -- including our long-time pals Cuba and China -- in a common passion. Perhaps it's a bit optimistic to assume a sporting event has the power to break down cultural barriers. Maybe there's nothing to the fact that countless kids from Tokyo to the Dominican Republic share the same love. But anything that makes us notice our similarities instead of our differences can't be completely without merit, no matter how hard Canada cheats.
