The College Tennis Online No. 67-ranked Cougars (9-2) are in the middle of a home stand that has wielded three-straight victories. The UH tennis team will look to make it four in a row when they face the Lee College Rebels at 3 p.m. on the John E. Hoff Varsity Tennis Courts.

On Wednesday, the Cougars extended their winning streak
to three matches and improved their overall record to 9-2 when they defeated
Middle Tennessee State (5-6) 4-2 at Hoff Courts.
Senior Kami Miller got the Cougars off to a good start when she defeated Elvira Yusupova 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles position. Senior Yolandi Terblanche followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kelly Adams in the No. 5 spot to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the match. Houston would then go up 3-0 with junior Loli Gomez's 6-2, 6-1 victory over Claudia Szabo in the No. 2 singles spot. With the Cougars dropping their next match, sophomore Brianna Bateup denied Middle Tennessee State's bid for a comeback when she defeated Marlene Chemin 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 1 position. Gomez played two seasons for Lee College before transferring to UH this fall. In 2005 she was named the Junior College Player of the Year as a member of the Lee College tennis team. Coach John Severance spoke on the match-up. "It's a special match for Loli to play her former team; she's really looking forward to it," Severance said. "We've done this (played Lee College) over the last couple of years because they are a top national junior college program. It should be a good match, and it might allow us to do a couple of different things with the lineup." Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
