News UH4U claims executive seats Independents take two seats from the only party represented in this year's election by JEB SCHNEIDER
The Student Government Association general election results were tallied March 10, proving the UH4U party to be the big winner. College of Liberal Arts and Social Science senatorial candidate Brady Alland filed five more complaints Friday after losing his bid for Seat 6. The official election results in the 26 races show a near sweep for the UH4U party winning 22 seats. UH4U won five of only seven seats contested by independents. No other party participated in the election. Francisco Zelaya is the president-elect for the 43rd SGA administration. CLASS Sen. David Rosen is the incoming vice-president and Ashley Glaw is the new student regent. All three are members of UH4U. Uncontested At-Large Senate Seats 1, 2 and 4 went to Kelli Harper, Carlos Abanto and Matthew Labita, respectively. In the At-Large Seat 3 race UH4U's Bilal Zakaria defeated Independent Nicholas Slaughter by 157 votes. The three College of Business seats were all uncontested and went to Ahmed Ansari, Salman Amanullah and Mubeen Khumawala. Catherine Hoyle won the College of Education Seat 2 without opposition. Hwansung Kang won the College of Engineering Seat 1. Independent Freddy Rodriguez beat out two opponents for Seat 2. He defeated fellow independent Jesus Gonzalez and UH4U's Cedric Jameson. UH4U's John Miller ran unopposed for the College of Hotel and Restaurant Management Seat 1. Jared Farber, Naomi Viescas and Jason Boitnott won CLASS Seats 1, 2 and 4, respectively. These candidates are members of UH4U. UH4U's Samuel Dike defeated Shreyasee Das by 28 votes for CLASS Seat 3; Seat 5 went to Ryan Free who beat out Vaseem Ahmed by 30 votes. The hotly contested CLASS Seat 6 went to UH4U's Brandon Brewton, who defeated Brady Alland by 20 votes and Atif Khan by 67 votes. Seat 7 went to Independent candidate Paul DeCarlo, who faced no challengers. College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Seats 1 and 3 went to UH4U's Ryan White and Mujan Noroozian, respectively. In the NSM race for Seat 2, Independent Vinh Nguyen handed UH4U a rare defeat as he beat Patrick Tyczynski by 21 votes. The Graduate College of Social Work, the College of Technology and the Honors College each had one unopposed seat. The positions went to UH4U candidates Chuck Fleming, Emerson Vance and Judah Jones, respectively. The referendum on the adoption of a new SGA Constitution passed by an 84 percent margin, with only 130 out of 812 voters opposing its adoption. Send comments to dcnews@mail.uh.edu |
