Arizona State toasts Cougar racquets, winning streak

On Saturday, the No. 67 ranked UH tennis team (12-3) tried to improve their 1-2 road record against ranked opponents when it faced No. 12 Arizona State (9-4) at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

Earlier in the week, the Cougars extended their overall win streak to a season high of six matches when they defeated Columbia 6-1 at home Monday and Northern Arizona 6-1 on the road Thursday.

However, the Cougars would see their win streak come to an end in Arizona, as the Sun Devils went on to defeat the Cougars 7-0.

The Cougars started the match by dropping the doubles point. It was only the third time this season the Cougars failed to win the doubles point as ASU took the match 8-1, 8-2, 8-2.

"The good thing is that we were not intimidated especially after getting blown out in doubles," head coach John Severance said in a release. "I was impressed that (we) fought hard in (the) singles after falling behind 2-0 and even though we lost the match we got much stronger as a team."

In singles action, junior Loli Gomez played close in the first set of her match but would come up short in a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Sabrina Capannolo at the top of the lineup. In the No. 2 spot, sophomore Brianna Bateup fell 6-4, 6-3 to Roxanne Clarke.

The Cougars' closest matches would come in the No. 3 and 4 spots in the lineup. In the No. 3 spot junior Sonja Nikolic lost the first set of her match 6-1 against junior Kady Pooler, but would fight back to take a 6-5 advantage in the second set. However, Pooler would bounce back and take the set 7-6 in a tiebreak to win.

In the No. 4 spot, senior Kami Miller fell to No. 121-ranked Rebecca Rankin 6-2, 3-6, 1-0. Miller came close to defeating Rankin, but lost a tiebreak 10-3 in the final set.

Arizona State also claimed victories in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions to complete its 7-0 win against Houston.

The Cougars look to bounce back from their loss this weekend when they return home to face Texas-Pan America (1-6) at noon Saturday, and Tulsa (7-6) on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the John E. Hoff Varsity Tennis Courts. UH are 8-0 on this season at Hoff Courts. Admission to all UH tennis matches is free.
