Sports Golfers awarded sixth place at Border Olympics Newman ties for fifth place after
215 score performance;
Cougar Sports Services UH finished sixth at the Border Olympics held in Laredo all day Friday and Saturday. The Cougars finished at par 72, shooting 883 and snapped a four-game winning streak. Baylor took the tournament with a score of 855, while Memphis finished five strokes behind the Bears. Texas at Arlington finished seven stokes behind Memphis, while New Mexico State just missed third by two strokes. Lamar finished ahead of the Cougars with a score of 873. Rice, Notre Dame, Southeastern Louisiana and South Alabama rounded out the top ten. Senior Kevin Newman was the only player for the Cougars who placed in the top ten during the tournament. Junior Pablo Acuna tied for 14th with a score of 218 over 54 holes. Junior Ricky Romano tied for 45th with a score of 224, while sophomore Jordan Irwin tied for 51st shooting 226 and senior Zach Mowbray tied for 79th with a score of 239. The Cougars finished the first day tied for fifth, shooting at par-72. Baylor led the first day, shooting 561 after two rounds. Memphis was seven strokes back of the Bears, while New Mexico State sat one stroke back of Memphis, followed by UT-Arlington with a score of 573 and UH and Lamar five strokes back of UT-Arlington. Acuna and Newman finished Friday both tied for fifth with a score of 141 after 36 holes. Newman started with a 68 in the first round, 73 in the second, while Acuna shot a 70 and 71, respectively. The Cougars will return to action on March 27 and
28 when they travel to Little Rock, Ark., to compete at the First Tee/UALR
Collegiate Classic.
