Sports Golden Hurricane pours on Cougars Tulsa defeats UH softball in 3-2 decision; rain postpones second game to today at 2 p.m. Cougar Sports Services The UH softball team lost a close battle to Tulsa 3-2 in the opening game of their Conference USA doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Donna J. Hardesty Softball Complex. The second game of the series was postponed when rain returned in the top of the first inning with freshmen Katie Bush and Jessica Valis on first and second base, respectively, and freshman Elaina Nordstrom at the plate with no outs. The second game will resume today at 2 p.m. UH sophomore starter Angel Shamblin (8-5) went the distance, but was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs on two hits with nine strikeouts against five walks. Senior Tulsa starter Maren Genow (10-3) picked up the win after throwing a complete game, allowing four hits and two runs. UH (20-11, 2-2 C-USA) started the game off by loading the bases in the first inning, but came up empty after freshman Christa Raley struck out to end the inning. Tulsa (17-9, 4-0) wasted no time in the bottom of that inning, sending eight batters to the plate to score three runs, all the runs they would need for the game. Senior Kelli McGlasson started the scoring off by ripping a two-run RBI-double, scoring freshman Brooke Smart and sophomore Sara Dyer, who reached on walks. Jessica Barr drove in McGlasson with an RBI-single that went past a diving freshman Jessica Valis and went into centerfield. The Cougars responded in the next frame when senior Brandi Clark led off the inning with an infield single and Valis reached on a walk. Bush placed an RBI-single down the left field line, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Freshman Laurie Wagner reached on a fielder's choice, but the rally ended after Valis was thrown out at the plate while trying to score from second base. Senior pinch hitter Jaci Gonzalez hit a solo home
run in the top of the sixth that brought UH within 3-2, but the Golden
Hurricane retired the Cougars in order in the seventh to hold on for the
one-run victory.
