Life & Arts UH writers explore feminism at Blaffer 'Girls, Ladies, Others' held in conjunction with 'Girls' Night Out' by DUSTI RHODES
The Blaffer Gallery will lend its exhibition halls to the voices of UH writers today at noon for Girls, Ladies, Others, an event that will examine the idea of the feminine through prose and poetry in conjunction with its Girls' Night Out exhibit. Femininity has been explored in literature from as far back as the Homeric epics, and has always remained a main focus of many great works from as far back as the fifth century. Six graduate students from the creative writing program will examine the current attitudes toward femininity. Girls' Night Out is a visual look into the exploration of how women are perceived in art. Girls, Ladies, Others goes hand in hand, as writers explore how the many ways women have been and continue to be interpreted in literature. Creative Writing Ph.D. candidate James Hall will read "Adventures in Old Lady Land." Hall is the associate editor of the Houston Literature and Fine Arts Journal Gulf Coast. Randi Faust is an MFA fiction candidate, and will share her work "Fence Days" at the event. Faust was nominated for a Pushcart Prize for her short story "Holiday." Lacy M. Johnson, also a Ph.D. candidate in creative writing, will read from her work "White Trash Primer." Johnson recently received the Presidential Erhardt Fellowship and an honorable mention in the American Academy of Poets in 2006. Other readers include Kathryn Peterson, Amanda Nowlin O' Banion and Jericho Brown. The event is free to the public. Girls' Night Out
is running until April 1. For more information call (713) 743- 9530 or
