Cougar tennis team returns to friendly territory

Unbeaten on the Hoff courts, UH will face Lady Broncs on Saturday,
then Golden Hurricanes

The College Tennis Online No. 67 ranked UH tennis team (12-3) is 8-0 at the John E. Hoff Varsity Tennis Courts this season.

This weekend the Cougars will look to keep their undefeated home record intact when they face Texas-Pan American (5-8) at noon Saturday and Tulsa (7-6) on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Hoff Courts.

The UTPA Lady Broncs have won three of their last four matches, but recently fell to Texas-San Antonio 5-2 on Saturday. The Lady Broncs will look to rebound against the Cougars this weekend, but UH head coach John Severance expects his team to pick up its play where it left off in Arizona.

Senior Kami Miller, currently eighth on the all time UH singles list in wins lost a tie breaker game 10-3 in Houston's March 18 match against Arizona State.

"We need to stay focused and come out (against Texas-Pan American) and repeat our tennis performance from last week against Arizona State," Severance said.

On Sunday, the Cougars will face Conference USA foe Tulsa. Recently, the Golden Hurricanes' schedule has been littered with ranked opponents. This past week, Tulsa fell to No. 16 Harvard 6-1 and No. 63 Boston College 4-3. They will play No. 52 Oklahoma State on Wednesday and No. 75 Rice this Saturday before matching up with the Cougars.

"This will definitely be our toughest home challenge to date." Severance said. "They're a very strong team and we're really going to have to come out and play some pretty good ball on Sunday."

All season, the Cougars have found a way to win at Hoff Courts, and will look to make it 10 in a row at home to start the season this weekend. Severance spoke on his teams' goals regarding to home court.

"There's a sense of pride playing at home," Severance said. "That is our goal, to try and be undefeated at home this year. If we do that, the rankings and the seedings in conference will take of itself if we can go undefeated at home. That's a very tough task for any team in any sport. Hopefully we can continue it one match at a time starting Saturday against Pan American."
