News Vows, praise mark last meeting New SGA officials will face lingering issues when installed April 5 by JEB SCHNEIDERT
The 42nd Student Government Association Senate held its final meeting before the installation of the newly elected group of senators and executive officers April 5. Outgoing president David Williams thanked all of the senators and SGA members for a productive and successful office term. Williams did not cite specifics but conceded his term had passed quickly and the only regret was that he wasn’t able to accomplish more of the goals he had established.
Student Government Association Student Regent Carlos Machado said Wednesday students should attend the Student Fee Forum at 5:30 p.m. today in the University Center Dallas room to voice concerns about tuition and fees increases for fiscal year 2007. Jim McCormick/The Daily Cougar "I thought a year was a long time," Williams said. "But my time has passed very quickly and I wish that more could have been done, but I am proud of our accomplishments." Outgoing senator and incoming vice president David Rosen announced he is prepared to introduce legislation authorizing a full investigation into the election problems preventing students from voting. "I have drafted a bill that would form an investigatory committee to be appointed by the executives of the next administration to look into these problems to determine who exactly is to blame for the problems of all those who tried to vote on March 8 and 9 and were unable to," Rosen said. "If the election commission does not sufficiently address the issue of who is to blame, whether Cougar 1 or the IT people, what specifically went wrong, and what can be done to remedy the situation, then I will introduce the legislation," Rosen said. "It is unfortunate that the issue of election reform currently has a poster boy … who lost his election. However, this is a very serious issue." The Senate also tabled a resolution adopted in November concerning the transition of Cullen Performance Hall into classroom facilities. The issue was moved for further discussion until after April 5 when Provost Donald Foss and resolution sponsor Keith Walker will address the Senate. The Senate also discussed a proposal for Aramark to begin serving food on campus specifically for Jewish and Muslim students. President Williams said this proposal was first passed by the 41st administration but has been delayed by inaction on Aramark’s part. It was suggested the matter be looked into by the next administration. Send comments to dcnews@mail.uh.edu |
