Frontier Fiesta boasts diverse lineup

Jimmy Gonzales y Grupo Mazz to open annual UH event

Frontier Fiesta will kick off tonight featuring a concert lineup more diverse than previous years.

Brian Sellen, Frontier Fiesta chairman, said members of the Fiesta Board have increased the diversity in the shows this year to encourage more students to attend.

The annual event will be held through Saturday in the parking lot next to Robertson Stadium. All shows begin at 9 p.m.

Tonight will feature five-time Grammy award winner Jimmy Gonzales y Grupo Mazz, a Tejano band, along with Latin band LT5 on the main stage.

On Friday, hip-hop night, Urban Premiere and Dem Franchise Boyz will be performing in Hofheinz Pavilion.

Saturday is the night of traditional Texas country music featuring Reckless Kelly and Randy Rogers Band on the main stage.

Feeding James, the winner of the Frontier Fiesta Association's battle of the bands, will open Saturday night.

Brian Kelly, UH alumnus and singer for Feeding James, said his band is thrilled to play at Frontier Fiesta because they have a unique sound not found in other groups' music.

"I'm personally excited to perform at Fiesta. I used to sing in variety shows with my fraternity, and now I get to come back and perform in a band," Kelly said.

Frontier Fiesta activities also include variety shows, barbecue cook-offs, multi-cultural performances and carnival rides and games.

Director of Productions Kristen Tilton said the Fiesta Board hopes that having more multicultural shows will attract more people to the event by appealing to a variety of groups.

University Studies freshman Maria Canlas said she wants to attend Frontier Fiesta this year to see the various entertainment it has to offer.

"I find it fascinating to see the University united for a whole weekend of fun," Canlas said.

Frontier Fiesta dates backs to 1940.
