News Event links researchers, public Biennial Research and Scholarship Day draws attention from local business, industry Cougar News Services Lost Latino writings and high-tech police cars are just two of the projects that will be on display Friday at Research and Scholarship Day, a day that celebrates research and the academic activities and achievements at UH. The event, which happens every two years, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the UH Hilton's Conrad Hilton Ballroom. Through various exhibits, the sixth biennial Research and Scholarship Day allows UH researchers and scholars to demonstrate and discuss their research and programs with the public. "Research is an integral part of our educational mission," Arthur C. Vailas, vice chancellor and vice president for research and intellectual property management at UH, said in a press release. "We have many exciting research programs taking place on our campus, and we support an atmosphere that enhances scientific and creative activities." The event is open to the public and will attract Houston-area educators, personnel from the Texas Medical Center and members of area businesses and industries. UH Division of Research's Web site says the event has a "direct benefit of enriching the quality and scope of UH research and scholarship both on campus and in concert with other groups." At the event, the Arte Publico Press will showcase lost Latino writings, documents that date back to the American colonial period. The special high-tech police cars are part of the "Smart Police Car Test and Evaluation Project," a project that highlights the growing partnership between the law enforcement community and academia. The Texas Learning and Computational Center will be in attendance to showcase its facilities, which include state-of-the-art computation, visualization and educational tools that serve to enhance biological, biomedical and energy research. The Abramson Family Center for the Future of Health
will also have an exhibit at event.
