Letters to the Editor

Attack issue, not person

To the editor:

I recently had an opportunity to read The Daily Cougar on Wednesday, only to find sensational topics and opinions of those writing responses to Melissa Correra's article "Immigrants Need Law and Not Our Backs," (Opinion, Monday) going array very fast.

As I read the section, I became sickened and could not believe the amount of personal attacks because she chose to voice her opinion. Grant it, the topic she chose to speak and write on is a hot topic and in some circles deemed controversial, but that does not give the right to the students who wrote responses to her article to reduce themselves to attack Correa's character, ancestry or heritage.

It disturbs me to find that students at this university lack the integrity and moral fortitude in voicing their opinions without attacking a person's character, ability or intellectual level. These attacks were not professional, proper or polite. One may choose to attack the piece the author has written, not an individual's character. We, as educated people, need to rise above petty emotional and illogical attacks and comment on the facts and information presented.
