Sports UH pulls anchor, sets sail forECU Lincoln, Stewart lead Cougars into foreign waters against hot Pirates by RONNIE TURNER
The UH baseball team has enjoyed quite a bit of success at Cougar Field over their last eight games, going 5-3 in that period, but now the Cougars will have to see whether they can replicate that same sort of success away from the home diamond. Houston will face off against East Carolina in a Conference USA three-game series at Clark-LeClair Stadium beginning tonight at 6 p.m.
Junior pitcher Brad Lincoln has a 1.84 ERA and a 5-1 record so far this season. Second only to fellow pitcher Ricky Hargrove, Lincoln's only given up 12 earned runs. By NADA ELSAYED/The Daily Cougar UH (16-12, 3-0 C-USA) will send its ace, junior right-hander Brad Lincoln (5-1, 1.84 ERA) to the mound for tonight's start. In his last start against Marshall, Lincoln threw a dominant complete game shutout in UH's 7-0 win, allowing only three hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Lincoln leads the team in strikeouts with 71, and has done some damage with his bat as well, batting .270 while leading the team in home runs (five) and RBIs (24). On Monday, he was named the C-USA Co-Pitcher of the Week, sharing the award with Southern Miss senior Cliff Russum. His mound opponent will most likely be sophomore right-hander T.J. Hose (3-1, 2.51). In his last start, a 4-3 win over Rice, Hose picked up a no-decision after going 6.2 innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and with three walks and five strikeouts. Hose was partly responsible for ECU (17-10, 1-2 C-USA) picking up its only win in its road series against Rice over the weekend. Since that game, the Pirates have rolled into a three-game winning streak. In their last game against North Carolina State on Wednesday, the Pirates fell 5-4 after the bullpen failed to hold a one-run lead in the late innings. UH will enter tonight's game with a three-game winning streak after a three-game sweep of Marshall last the weekend. The Cougars had been scheduled to play Prairie View A&M on Tuesday night at Cougar Field, but because of heavy rain in the area, the game was postponed and will be made up at a later date yet to be determined. Houston will bring along one of the hottest hitters in the league in junior outfielder Jake Stewart. Stewart currently is second on the team with a .329 batting average and tied for the lead in doubles with seven. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
