Sports UH fares well in Spring Tournament Houston finishes 13th in medley relays Cougar Sports Services The Houston Cougars sent four competitors, freshmen Sasha Schwendenwein, Lauren VanCleave, Andrea Pa'lmai and junior Szintia Szanto, to the 2006 USA Spring Championships at the King County Aquatic Center. The Cougars had not had a national qualifier in almost 15 years, before this past weekend. Szanto, Pa'lmai and VanCleave all competed in the 200-meter individual medley on Saturday. Szanto was the only Cougar to place in the top 50, with a time of 2:23.84, enough for 35th. Pa'lmai finished 2.99 seconds behind Szanto and placed 59th. VanCleave finished 81st with a time of 2:28.97. VanCleave competed in the 50-meter freestyle and finished 74th with a time of 28.35. VanCleave also placed 19th in the 100-meter butterfly clocking a time of 1:02.84. Szanto also took part in two other individual events. She competed in the 100-meter breaststroke and the 100-meter butterfly, with times of 1:14.92 and 1:04.75 respectively. Houston competed in the 400-meter medley relay for their final event. The Cougars finished 13th overall with a time of 4:26.57. The Cougars also competed in the 400-meter freestyle relay Friday, finishing 15th with a time of 3:59.57. On Thursday, the Cougars competed in the 800-meter freestyle relay, finishing 15th posting a time of 8:36.87. Schwendenwein placed 41st in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:07.28. Pa'lmai also participated in two events. She finished 49th in the 400-meter individual medley posting a time of 5:08.81, and 87th in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:07.28. Wednesday was the first full day for the Cougars. Szanto took part in the 200-meter breaststroke placing 24th with a time of 2:39.16. Szanto also finished seventh in the bonus finals, with a time of 2:41.97. VanCleave took part in the 200-meter butterfly and finished 44th with a time of 2:22.47, while Pa'lmai finished 37th in the 200-meter backstroke posting a time of 2:24.60. Schwendenwein finished 76th in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:00.79. Next on the schedule for the Cougars is the U.S.
Open Diving from April 4 through April 9.
