Sports Texas' best just hitting their stride Houston expects good things to happen in Littlefield Texas Relays by BEN GEGENHEIMER
Nearly two weeks after the men's and women's track and field team won the combined team championship at the Texas Southern Relays, the Cougars will travel to Austin today to compete in the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. At the Texas Southern Relays, the Cougars were able to showcase the entire men's and women's teams for the first time during the 2006 outdoor campaign. In doing so, UH claimed victory in seven individual events and seven relays, including a first place time of 53.79 seconds by senior Sam Fobbs in the men's 400-meter hurdles.
Senior Sam fobbs snagged a first place finish in the 400-meter hyrdles in last month's Texas Southern Relays by running a time of 53.79. Gregory Bohuslav/The Daily Cougar Fobbs, who was also a member of the Cougars' distance medley relay championship squad, believes that the team is hitting their stride just at the right time. "We are doing pretty good," Fobbs said. "The team is starting to come together and everybody is trying to get their chemistry back together. We have some freshmen, so we have to work with them to get them some experience." Leadership of upperclassmen has been key for the Cougars this year. On the men's side, junior sprinter Carey LaCour and the speedster Fobbs have teamed with senior distance runner Sesar Figueroa and senior thrower Jonathan Reeves to rack up victories for UH. Meanwhile, the women's team has been paced by senior sprinter Cheryl Garner, junior sprinter Octavia Garrett and junior jumper Caresir Hamilton. The experience shared amongst these seasoned Cougars could be an asset as they head into this weekend's competition. The meet will feature 3,800 of the nation's top professional, collegiate and high school track and field athletes from all across the country. Many of the participants will be representing schools from Texas, giving UH an opportunity to prove that they are one of the premier track and field programs in the state. "Whenever we go to the Texas Relays, it's always about the competition," Fobbs said. "That's where everybody is at, so basically we are just going to go out there and work hard. We are going to show them where we are at and show them what Houston is about." The meet begins April 8, and will be held at the Mike A. Meyers Stadium on the UT campus. dcsports@mail.uh.edu
