Cougars prepare for final home stand

Houston will look to round out 2006 season with a perfect 13-0 record at the Hoff Courts

There has been no place like home for the UH tennis team this season. The Cougars (16-4) are 10-0 at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts and as the regular season comes to a close this weekend, Houston will look to end the 2005-2006 campaign with a 13-0 home record.

The Cougars' quest for perfection will begin on Friday at 1 p.m. when they take on Texas A&M Corpus Christi (5-6). Houston will conclude its three-match home stand Sunday when it faces Arkansas State (9-6) at 9 a.m. and Louisiana Tech (0-9) at 2 p.m. at the John E. Hoff Courts.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi (5-6) has won four of its last five matches, including a 6-1 victory over Texas-Pan American on April 1. UH head Coach John Severance does not underestimate the Islanders.

"Corpus Christi has always been a decent team and they're not a team to take lightly," Severance said. "They're coming to our place where we are undefeated at home and our goal is to stay undefeated at home."

The Cougars next opponent, Arkansas State, will play North Texas on Friday and will face Louisiana Tech on Saturday at Hoff Courts before facing off against the Cougars Sunday. The Indians will go into their match with North Texas having lost two of their last three matches.

Later that day, Houston will conclude its weekend and regular season against Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs will face Arkansas State on Saturday at Hoff Courts.

The Cougars have won four of their last five matches but recently fell to C-USA rival No. 47 SMU, 5-2, on April 2. After the loss Houston was dropped from the rankings.

"I'm a little bewildered by the fact that we dropped out (of the rankings) but you can't gauge a team based on a ranking," Severance said. "We were right there against SMU who is 47 right now and is the conference leader. We're looking forward to a rematch with them. We'll just do our talking at the conference tournament."

UH women's basketball head coach Joe Curl will have an outdoor cook-out at the Hoff Tennis Courts on Sunday. It will be open to the public. Admission to all UH tennis matches is free.
