UH Law argues way to victory

Students practice maritime law in mock court competition

Cougar News Services

Three University of Houston Law Center students returned victorious from the annual Judge John R. Brown Admiralty Law Competition.

The three-person team consisting of Charlie Lestage, Howard Marshall and Jim Nye earned top honors in the 13-school moot court competition.

Moot court competitions mock appellate court procedures. Competitors in the Judge John R. Brown Admiralty Law Competition are given hypothetical facts about maritime law, and are asked to write briefs and argue their cases in front of judges.

The competition is hosted in a different city each year. For 2006, Tulane University was scheduled to host the tournament, but remaining damage from Hurricane Katrina encouraged competition officials to search for a new host site.

When the Law Center offered to co-sponsor the annual event, the competition was moved to downtown Houston's federal court building.

"Being selected to host this tournament was a credit to our school, our city and the maritime traditions of our port. Winning the title simply added a little more wind to the sail," UH Law Center Adjunct Professor Gus Schill said in a release.

The winning team also received a second national title, Best Brief, and Nye was awarded Best Speaker of the tournament. A second Law Center team of three students -- Paxton Crew, Victor Leung and Shaden Yousef -- went on to the competition's semifinals.
