Sports Houston finishes fifth over weekend Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate holds UH at two over par by JONG LEE
The Cougars took part in their last tournament of the season on Friday and Saturday. The two-day tournament was presented by Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate and was held in Cary, North Carolina at MacGregor Downs Country Club. The Cougars finished fifth overall, shooting 866 among the three rounds, taking a two over-par performance as their final tune-up before the conference championships. University of Kentucky took the tournament by four strokes, shooting 10-under-par 854. Duke University came in second with a performance of six-under-par 858. University of North Carolina, who came into Saturday tied for first, struggled, shooting 293 in round three, finishing with a score of 860. Kent State pulled even, finishing fourth overall in the tournament. Houston finished with a score of 866 and Vanderbilt fell two strokes of the Cougars. Tulsa and North Carolina State tied for seventh with a score of 869, only one stroke back of Vanderbilt. Georgia Southern University ended the third round on a good note, shooting a 290, but finished ninth. Virginia Tech rounded off the top ten with a 15-over-par 879. The Cougars fell from their fourth place finish after two rounds. They finished the first day trailing both North Carolina and Kentucky by seven strokes. Duke was ahead of the Cougars, with the rest of the pack trailing close behind. Vanderbilt had a very strong early start, shooting 575 after two rounds. Kent State and Tulsa trailed Vanderbilt by only one stroke, while Georgia Southern and North Carolina State finished day one with a 580. Rice and Virginia Tech scored a 589 to round off the top 10 for day one. Every Cougar finished in the top 30 at the tournament. Houston only placed in two positions, two tying for 16th and three tying for 30th. Senior Kevin Newman and junior Pablo Acuna each placed 16th for the tournament, shooting even-par 216. Both Newman and Acuna shot a 72 in their final round. Senior Zach Mowbray, junior Ricky Romano and sophomore Jordan Irwin all tied for 30th with a score of four-over-par 220. The Cougars have a few weeks to rest before they have to head to West Point, Mississippi to take part in the 2006 Conference USA Championships, on April 17-19. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
