Sports There's no place like home for UH tennis by MARK SUAREZ
In their final home stand of the season, the UH tennis team became only the second team in school history to end the regular season with an undefeated record at home. Houston (19-4) capped-off its 3-match home stand and regular season this weekend with victories over Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Louisiana Tech, and Arkansas State, pushing their home record to 13-0. Dating back to last season, the Cougars have won 19 straight matches at home. On Friday, the Cougars jumped out of the gates quickly, pummeling Texas A&M Corpus Christi (5-7) 6-1. Houston started by taking the doubles point 8-1, 8-4, 6-8. In singles play, Houston would round off a 6-1 win thanks, in part, to outstanding victories by senior Kami Miller, sophmore Brianna Bateup and freshman Vicki Simpson. With her win in the No. 4 position, Miller moved into 7th all-time in UH career singles victories. "It feels really good to be No. 7 all-time," Miller said. "I've worked hard to get to this point and it's another goal that I'm proud to say that I've accomplished." The Cougars pounded Louisiana Tech 6-0 on Saturday. In singles action, senior Sarah Reimer notched a 6-0, 6-0 win to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Miller would follow suit with a 6-0, 6-0 victory to extend Houston's lead. Simpson would then register a 6-2, 6-2 victory over freshman Caroline Tran in the No. 3 spot of the lineup to put the Cougars up 3-0. Houston would take the match when junior Sonja Nikolic won 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 position of the lineup. Houston would also claim victories in the No. 1 and 2 singles positions to complete its sweep over Louisiana Tech. On Sunday, Houston concluded its regular season with a 5-2 victory over Arkansas State. Before the match Houston celebrated Senior Day and honored its three seniors: Miller, Terblanche, and Reimer in a pre-match ceremony. Houston began play by taking the doubles point 8-5, 8-6, 7-9. In singles action, Terblanche defeated sophomore Renee Branker 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot. Simpson would follow with a 6-2, 6-4 win over sophomore Karen Saravia at the bottom of the lineup. Later in the match, Miller would seal the win for the Cougars with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over freshman Paula Chelminska in the No. 4 position. Junior Loli Gomez would end the day with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over sophomore Maria Oprea in the No. 2 spot to round out Houston's 5-2 win. For Terblanche, playing her last home match was an experience she'll never forget. "It felt really awesome playing at home being a senior and coming off with a win," Terblanche said. "They (Arkansas State) were a tough team and just to be able to play in front of our fans and pull out a win meant so much to me." The Cougars will now have 10 days to prepare for the April 20 C-USA Tournament in Dallas. Conference seedings for the three-day tournament are expected to be announced next week Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
