Sports UH left its mark on Texas Relays Relay teams place, individuals qualify by BEN GEGENHEIMER
The track and field team capped off its performance at the 59th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays by picking up two victories on the final day of competition. Saturday's first place finishes by the men's 4x400-meter and 4x200-meter relay teams were the highlights of the four-day event for UH, which began on Wednesday. Junior Chris White, junior Carey LaCour, freshman Justin McQueen and sophomore Kolee Latson won the championship in the 4x400-meter with a time of 3:06.08. In the 4x200, White and LaCour teamed with junior Preston Perry and sophomore Tremaine Smith for the win, with a time of 1:21.95. Perry also ran in the 100-meter dash on Saturday. His time of 10.50 seconds was worthy of a sixth place finish. The women's team placed a runner in the top-ten in its1500-meter competition, as freshman Kelcee Keenan finished eighth with a time of four minutes, 47.76 seconds. The men's decathalon also got underway on Wednesday. Sophomore Jarrett Flax dropped two spots during the final five events on Thursday and finished in ninth place with a total of 6,813 points. In addition, UH senior distance runner Sesar Figueroa posted a career-best time of 3:47.44 on Friday in the men's 1500 meters "section A" race, qualifying him for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. The women's 4x400-meter relay team also qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships as seniors Cheryl Garner and Keisha Howard and juniors LaDedra Guy and Ebonie Floyd combined to finish 12th overall with a time of 3:35.18. The Cougars return this weekend to compete in the
Golden Bear Invitational in Berkley, Calif.
