News Fraternity fund raiser to sell UH gear UH hosts WalkAmerca for 10th year, business school organizations compete in fundraisers by MAI BUI
The Delta Sigma Pi fraternity will sell UH shirts and hats Tuesday through Thursday to raise money for the March of Dimes charity. The fraternity will be selling the items at the University Center North Patio. Delta Sigma Pi President Lam Le said the T-shirts will cost $10, polo-style shirts $20 and hats $10. In cooperation with UH and the Bauer College of Business, the fraternity will host the 2006 March of Dimes WalkAmerica at 9 a.m. April 30. The march will start and finish at Cullen Boulevard near Entrance 14. This will be the 10th year the University has hosted the event. A similar fundraiser in February sold similar items -- tote bags, T-shirts and hats -- but raised only $250 because the items were printed with Bauer College of Business logos. Le said this fundraiser will target a broader market and should raise more money for the cause. This will be the first time Delta Sigma Pi has participated in March of Dimes and Le said the group plans to raise about $1,000 through sales. "We just want to encourage people to come to the walk to support March of Dimes. Another way to support is to come by our tent … and buy a UH shirt or hat," Steven Tannous, program manager of Bauer College of Business, said. Also, Wednesday and Thursday the entrepreneur program at the Bauer College of Business will host Burger Fest. Students on eight teams will set up booths on the UC North Patio and compete against each other for the most sales. The event will last from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. "We're hoping that at the same time, we'll have a tent visible from there so we're hoping to sell all of the merchandise we have. My goal is to make $500 for next week," said Steven Tannous, program manager of Bauer School of Business, said. The last fundraising event will be held Sunday April 30. Members of Delta Sigma Pi will sell UH hats with March of Dimes logos for $10. All money that is raised will go toward the March of Dimes campaign. March of Dimes, started in 1938 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and is geared toward preventing birth defects, premature births and infant mortality. WalkAmerica is a nation-wide event. Last year, more than 24,000 teams participated in the walk to raise money to prevent premature birth. Delta Sigma Pi is a national co-ed Professional Business Fraternity founded in 1907. The fraternity promotes career development and leadership skills. The UH chapter started in the 1970s and consists of thirty members and eight alumni who are current faculty members at the Bauer College of Business. Activities such as résumé workshops, career seminars, and alumni panels are a few of many professional events the fraternity hosts. Along with professional events, Delta Sigma Pi also participates in community services. "Delt Sig has to plan five community service (events), so after the one on April 30, it'll be our eighth community service (event)," Le said. The fraternity participated in the Houston Food Bank, visited the DePelchin Children's Center and hosted a blood drive with the American Red Cross. "Our focus is professional and community service, but I guess we're more community service focused this semester. We do a lot of joint socials with the Finance Association, and we go to a club or (the UC) Underground and we go bowling," Le said. "The culture of Business school is so different than any other school's; it's networking. We enjoy hanging out with each other and helping each other out," he said.
