Sports UH sprints to wins at Berkeley track meet Brutus Hamilton Invitational races help runners qualify for NCAA regional meets by BEN GEGENHEIMER
The track and field team made Saturday's trip out to Berkeley, Calif., worth its while, as the Cougars claimed victory in 11 events at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. In addition, four UH sprinters registered regional qualifying times at the University of California's Edwards Stadium. The women won three individual events and one relay event. Junior sprinter Ebonie Floyd won the 200-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 23.14 seconds. In doing so, she qualified to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships at the end of May. Later, Floyd teamed with juniors Octavia Garrett, LaDedra Guy and freshman Seun Adigun to win the 4x100-meter relay race with a time of 45.40 seconds. Senior All-American Keisha Howard's season-best time of 54.57 seconds in the 400-meter dash gave her a first-place finish and qualified her for the NCAA Midwest Regional meet as well. Wrapping-up the victory total on the women's squad was senior All-American heptathlete Krystal Ward, who won the women's high jump after clearing 1.58 meters. On the men's side, the Cougars won six individual events and one relay race. Junior All-American sprinter Carey LaCour won the 200-meter championship with a season-best time of 20.59 seconds. Senior Preston Perry placed second in the race, clocking in at 20.85. As a result of their performance, both LaCour and Perry qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional meet. Perry and LaCour were also members of the winning 4x100-meter relay team as they joined freshman Justin McQueen and sophomore Tremaine Smith to finish the race in 40.41 seconds. Adding to the men's victories was sophomore Kolee Watson, who won the 400-meter dash with a career-best time of 46.96 seconds and senior Sesar Figueroa, the men's 5,000-meter champion. Figueroa's winning time of 14:32.36 was a career-best. Freshman Jeremy Kelly took first-place in the men's triple jump as with a leap of 14.46 meters (47 feet, 5.25 inches). Senior Jonathan Reeves won the men's shot put with a mark of 17.29 meters and placed third in the men's discus with a throw of 53.72 meters. The Cougars will return to the track next Saturday
when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to compete in the LSU Alumni Gold
