Bill would make Fiesta first priority

Rosen: Frontier Fiesta organizers rushed by new local soccer team

The Student Government Association Senate passed a bill Wednesday giving Frontier Fiesta Association activities, including construction and clean up, priority over Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo.

Vice President David Rosen said he proposed the bill to protect the UH tradition from being rushed out of the parking lots next to Robertson Stadium to make way for media covering the soccer game.

"The situation places a lot of stress of the organizers of (Frontier Fiesta)," Rosen said.

Rosen also led a group of senators to parts of campus surrounding the Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre to address a lighting issue.

"I don't believe it's a school funding issue. I believe it's a safety issue," Rosen said.

University Information Technology officials asked SGA members to inform constituents about the upgraded UH e-mail system.

"You don't have to do anything. Everything happens behind the scenes; it's done for you," project manager Mary Dickerson said. "And we're hoping that you'll be able to get the word out to your constituents."

The new program provides students, faculty and staff more e-mail storage space and spell-checking and formatting capabilities.

"Because we do have a newer faster server on the back end, this won't take you hours to download a picture," Dickerson said. "You won't have to pick up the phone and call the call desk to see how much mail you have."

The 9,500 active accounts will be out of service from 6 a.m. May 14 to 6 p.m. May 15. But Dickerson said any mail received during that time will be stored and distributed Monday after the upgrade is installed.

Also, IT will host a free workshop from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday in the University Center Pacific Room to answer questions about the e-mail system.

"You should be able to get the answers to most of your questions," Dickerson said. "The idea is that we want to give as much information to you so that you'll be able to help yourself as much as possible."
