News Sorority to look for 'Mr. Pink' at pageant Competition's winner will receive $500 scholarship, trophy by JOANNA GARCIA
The Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority will host its sixth annual Mr. Pink and Green Scholarship Pageant -- Hollywood Style at 7:08 p.m. today in the University Center Houston Room. The pageant promotes and supports college men in their pursuit of higher education. "(We accepted) any University of Houston gentlemen who took time to apply (for the pageant); we opened it to everybody," pageant chair Rebecca Savoy said. "We only had one contestant who is a fraternity boy." The participants have been practicing three days a week for the past two months. "They are going to be judged on their causal wear, swimwear competition, formal competition, question and answer and, of course, talent. There will be two choreographed dance categories in the show," Savoy said. The winner of Mr. Pink and Green will receive a $500 scholarship, a trophy and the title for a year. The other contestants will receive trophies. Alpha Kappa Alpha allocates funds from fund-raising events for the scholarship. The judges include UH alumni and staff. "The participants will be judged on creativity, style … their attitude and personality," Savoy said. Alpha Kappa Alpha members decided to have a pageant
for men because similar pageants on campus were only directed toward women.
