UH community to hit lanes for scholarships

Students, faculty, staff and Houston community members will show off their bowling skills for a good cause from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday at the University Center Cougar Lanes.

The UH Games for Scholars event will raise money for scholarships.

To participate in the event, individuals must raise at least $20, or teams of at least four people must raise at least $80.

A $150 Best Buy gift certificate will be awarded to the person who raises the most money.

"We're really focusing more on how to have fun as opposed to, ‘Let's beat each other bowling,'" Emily Messa, director of UH Business Services, said. "I know everybody's really nervous. They think (they're) not a great bowler, but, you know, come anyway."

The deadline for raising money is noon Thursday, but walk-up participants are welcome.

"If they don't have a team and they just want to come and see what it's about or bowl, we'll pull teams together," Messa said. "Don't worry -- just come and participate, and we'll get you on a team."

About 10 bowling teams are signed up so far, including staff teams from the UH Bookstore and the University Copy Center.

"Some of our staff has gotten really creative. We have a team that, not only are they a team, but they have cheerleaders. We've got a staff team that's calling themselves The Pinheads," Messa said.

UH Business Services, through UH Games for Scholars, is hoping to raise at least $3,500 to pair with the $6,500 that UH's snack food vendor Canteen donated for student scholarships. 

Messa said they will combine the donated money and endow the scholarship, which will enable them to give out two $250 scholarships a year to UH students. 

"Then each year, we're going to keep adding to the endowment, and the more money we can add, the more money we can give," Messa said. "So we're hoping that maybe five or 10 years down the road, all of a sudden it's 30, 40 or $50,000," Messa said.
