UH loads track team with Texas talent

Five top-notch Lone Star athletes will attend Houston, including one state champion

UH track and field coach Leroy Burrell announced the Cougars have signed five athletes, including three sprinters, a hurdler and a women's discus thrower. All athletes signed are Texas natives and will begin competing for the Cougars in 2007.

Brandon James, a student at Cuero High School, was the Class 3A state champion in the 200-meter in 2005. 

He also ran the anchor leg on Cuero's 4x100-meter relay state championship team as a junior. He is currently the reigning champion in the 100-meter in District 26-3A.

Chris Tindle is a sprinter from Dickinson High School and was the District 23-4A champion in the 200 and district runner-up in the 100. 

At the 2005 UIL Class 4A State Championships, Tindle placed third in the 100 with a wind-aided time of 10.52 seconds.

Westfield High School's Justin Davis currently owns the state's fifth-fastest overall time in the 400-meter at 47.89 seconds. He ran the anchor leg on Westfield's District 22-5A-winning 1600-meter relay team and finished in second place in the 400. 

The Cougars also landed Steven Jones, a hurdler from Lexington High School, who is ranked in the top 10 hurdlers in the state by TexasTrack.com. He won the 110-meter hurdles at the District 25-2A Championships and at the 2006 Texas Relays with a wind-aided time of 14.32 seconds. His personal best time in the 110 hurdles is 14.14 seconds. 

On the women's side, UH added a discus thrower in Ashley Bryant of Deer Park High School. TexasTrack.com ranks Bryant amongst the top four women's discus throwers in the state. She was runner-up in the discus throw at the 2005 UIL Class 5A Championships with a throw of 140-7.
