Sports Cougars set sights on C-USA tournament Team has long break between tourney
and last competition,
by JONG LEE
The Cougars are coming off a fifth-place finish at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate that was held April 7 and 8 in Cary, N.C. The tournament was held at MacGregor Downs Country Club, which is 6,878-yards long with a par of 72. The Cougars will now look on to the Conference Championships beginning April 24 at West Point, Miss. Last season, the Cougars finished the 2005 Conference USA Championships in a sixth place showing. Houston shot with a team score of 298 in the final round, while shooting 887 in all three rounds. In last year's conference tournament, junior Pablo Acuna finished tied for 19th after shooting a 221. Senior Kevin Newman tied for 23rd with a score of 222. Junior Ricky Romano shot a 225, tying him for 33rd and senior Zach Mowbray took a tie for 43rd shooting a 229. Texas Christian University took home the conference championships with an 841, 46 shots ahead of the Cougars. Houston and TCU were the only teams not to shoot more than 290 in any round. Charlotte would be the closest team to the Horned Frogs by the end of the tournament, finishing 26 shots behind. Tulane finished third with a score of 872 and University of Alabama-Birmingham shot an 877. Louisville finished four strokes ahead of Houston, with a score of 883. Memphis came within one stroke of the Cougars but finished seventh. Southern Mississippi shot a 900 with a 299 final round performance. Marquette and East Carolina rounded off the Top Ten, shooting 901 and 905, respectively. There is a big layoff between next week's action and Houston's last tournament. The Cougars finished up their last regular season tournament in fifth out of 13 teams, shooting a total team score of 866 on 54 holes. All five Cougars finished in the top 50, Newman and Acuna tying for 16th shooting an even-par 216. The rest of the team, Mowbray, Romano and sophomore Jordan Irwin, finished tied for 30th at 220. The C-USA tournament will be held on April 24 through
26 at Old Waverly Golf Course in West Point, Miss.
