Sorority to raise funds on diamond

Kickball tournament will benefit local breast cancer awareness 
and treatment organization

Kappa Delta Chi sorority will host its 5th Annual KDKickball Tournament at 9 a.m. Sunday at Diez Park in Houston. 

KDKickball is a competitive kickball tournament designed to raise breast cancer awareness, build camaraderie among local organizations and raise money to support local breast cancer foundations.

All of the proceeds of the event will benefit The Rose, a greater Houston-area non-profit breast health care center. 

The organization has helped many Pasadena residents pay for breast cancer screenings and treatment.

The Rose provides cancer screening, diagnosis and support to women regardless of their ability to pay for the services offered.

"We are thrilled they have chosen The Rose again to be the recipient of the proceeds of their fund-raising event," Kristy Brown, special events coordinator for The Rose, said. 

"It is quite an honor. It is my understanding that some of the mothers of the girls in the sorority have been plagued with breast cancer and have received their mammograms or treatments through The Rose," she said.

Kappa Delta Chi asked several different organizations to participate in the annual event and help raise funds and awareness. Fourteen teams registered and will volunteer their time for the cause. 

Organizations such as Delta Upsilon, Phi Mu, Gamma Alpha Omega, Sigma Lambda Gamma, Omega Delta Phi and others are participating in the fund-raiser. 

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. It is estimated that 212,920 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2006.

"(The amount being donated) can help about 100 women, it could definitely screen 100 women, or sponsor 10 or 15 women if they had to go through full treatment," Brown said. 

The entry fee of each player will be donated to The Rose. Sponsorships given by many companies will help feed the 149 participants and provide a matching team T-shirt. 

There will be tournaments for men and women, where first- and second-place awards will be presented, along with a spirit award. 

There will also be concession stand items for sale. The money raised for those items will be donated to Houston's Barrio Center, 5115 Harrisburg St. 

The Barrio Center has lost its federal funding and needs all the donations possible to stay open and continue its services to the children of the neighborhood.

Any donations to the tournament benefiting The Rose or the Barrio Center can be mailed to Kappa Delta Chi, 51 University Center, CA Box 42, Houston, TX, 77204.
