News Students enjoy rooftop music scene Coffee House and Rooftop Sessions a hit, RHA and Honors Ambassadors to plan more events by KELSIE HAHN
UH students lined the Oberholtzer Hall rooftop for an evening of head nodding, toe tapping and even dancing at the second Coffee House and Rooftop Session Friday. Economics senior Ryan Mireles said he came to see the band Brown vs. Board and to relax before preparing for final exams. "A couple of my friends are in the band," Mireles said. Biochemistry junior Yesenia Flores said she also attended the event in order to take a break from studying and let go of the stress surrounding the final exam period. "I'm excited to be here. I just took an organic test ? I need to relax," Flores said. Theater freshman Elizabeth Grant said she would join the Honors College next semester, and as a new recruit wanted to make new friends and take advantage of the open mic. "I'm trying to meet people. I'm also sort of in the middle of a song writing phase, and I just love music," she said. "You can only clap for yourself so many times," she said. The event featured two local bands, Skyblue72 and Fnord. Skyblue72, a Houston-based trio coming off an East Coast tour to promote their debut album, has been looking for opportunities to connect with students at the University. "We wanted to hit UH ? we're working hard on this music. Being a Houston band, we felt like the people here should know about us," Frank Zweback, the bassist and back-up vocalist for the band said. The band will be performing next Saturday at the Westheimer Block Party, and will return to the University when they play at the Dynamo pre-game show May 6 at Robertson Stadium. Communication sophomore Brittani Ingram said the band's performance was a success. "I enjoyed it. The drummer (Jessica Zweback) was awesome ? she looked like she was having a lot of fun," Brittani said. Spanish and math freshman Franco Martinez said though he had never heard the band before, he appreciated the performance. "Instrumentally, they were really solid, they were really skilled," Martinez said. Following Skyblue72's set, the event moved from the rooftop to the Oberholtzer Ballroom for a performance by the Scottish folk band, Fnord. Students danced as political science and philosophy senior Diehl Moran played the violin for the group. Local musician Kendall Rogers filled in with percussion and keyboard and the two played jigs, reels and waltzes. "It's very relaxing," theater sophomore Jonathan Colunga said. Following the two bands, the stage was opened up for student musicians to participate in an open mic session. Vice President of Special Events Sharina Lofflad said the program was hosted by the Residential Housing Association and Honors Ambassadors and was designed to bring students together. "Part of the Honors Ambassadors is interacting not just with prospective students, but with the campus as a whole," Honors Ambassadors President Meghan Hendley said. The first Coffee House and Rooftop Session took place in March as part of a student recruitment event. Hendley said she wants to expand the program to become a bi-semester highlight for enrolled students too. The RHA and Honors Ambassadors representatives are looking to hold two similar events in the Fall 2006 semester and Lofflad said RHA is planning to hold one more social event before finals period begins next week.
