The UH track and field team posted three victories and four runner-up finishes this past weekend at the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.

Running in his first 400-meter event of the 2006 outdoor season, junior Carey LaCour snagged first-place with a career-best time of 45.87 seconds.

Meanwhile, junior Ebonie Floyd finished first in the women's 400-meter with a career-best time of 51.66 seconds while running in her first outdoor 400-meter race in nearly three years.

While LaCour and Floyd's efforts were the highlights of the Cougars' overall performance, LSU sophomore Xavier Carter stole the show at Bernie Moore Stadium.

Carter became the fastest man in LSU history when he crossed the finish line in first-place with a career-best time of 10.12 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

As a result, the Palm Bay, Fla., native became the first Tiger to hold the top spot in the 100- and 200-meter races at LSU in more than 26 years.

According to LSU head coach Dennis Shaver, Carter had not run the 100-meter race since his high school meet nearly two years ago, when he was crowned state champion in the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes.

Carter's mark of 10.12 seconds on Saturday is currently the fifth fastest time run in the world this year.

UH also received victories from junior Tristian Whitley and sophomore Ivan Diggs, who tied for first place in the men's high jump after both cleared 2.10 meters.

Junior sprinter LaDedra Guy finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.79 seconds, while the women's 4x100-meter relay team took second with a season-best time of 44.38 seconds.

The Cougars will resume competition this Thursday at the Drake Relays, and then will head to the Rice All-Comers meet on Saturday.
