News Smaller is better for Bauer Honors Business program allows The Honors
College students
by MARIAM KAHN
Eighty students, faculty, alumni and high school students considering attending UH participated in the second-annual Bauer Honors' "A Night at the Park" event Friday at Minute Maid Park. "The baseball game is a good way to relax, meet people and just have fun with friends," business junior Jessica Fung said. "An event like this gives you an environment to meet people you might take classes with and it makes it easier to talk in this type of setting." Academic adviser and Program Manager Brent Spraggins and Student Program coordinators Lula Carranza and Zy Nguyen founded the Bauer Honors program in 2001. In Spring 2002, the Bauer College of Business offered its first honors course. The program is made up of more than 200 students. "A small program like this is beneficial because you have a close relationship with your adviser and you are able to see the same people in your classes, so it's easier to find people with common interests and help when you need it," business sophomore Lindsay Roberts said. Business students can join the Bauer Honors program as members of The Honors College. Non-honors students who complete at least 12 semester hours at UH with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and meet degree plan requirements and course prerequisites are eligible to enroll in the honors business classes if there is availability. Though non-honors students are able to take honors business classes, they are not considered enrolled in the Bauer Honors program. The Bauer Honors program offers many business courses reserved just for honors students. Classes consist of no more than 25 students. "The small class environment makes the class feel more personal. I'm less hesitant to ask questions since it's such a small class, and it makes it easier to approach the teacher," business senior Cyma Yousuf said. The requirements to graduate with honors are the same as the requirements in The Honors College. One of the annual events that the Bauer Honors program holds is the Fall Mixer. Alumni, deans, current students and professors attend the event to socialize and help students network with professors and with alumni. "Bauer Honors is extremely beneficial in providing opportunities for any ambitious student who is looking to enhance their networking and academic skills," business junior Gunan Aslanova said. Pre-business students must file a degree plan to change their major to a specific concentration. More information is available in the Office of Undergraduate Business Programs in Room 262, Melcher Hall. The deadline to file for a degree plan to be effective Summer 2006 is May 19. The filing period for Fall 2006 is July 10 to Aug. 11. Send comments to dcnews@mail.uh.edu |
