With the Conference USA tournament right around the corner, the Cougar softball team is taking a break from conference play to take on Texas Southern and Grambling State. Junior Candi Kloecker evened her record at 9-9 while allowing only one hit during Game 1. Sophomore Barbie Love pitched a no-hitter and struck out seven in Game 2 and now holds a 2-2 record.

In Game 1, UH (33-18, 12-6 C-USA) began the scoring against TSU in the first with two hits thanks to freshman catcher Elaina Nordstrom's two-run homer to left center. The Cougars added one more in the fourth and the remaining six in the fifth inning when Nordstrom, Shamblin and freshman Laurie Wagner each singled. Junior Laura Durham's single to right field scored Shamblin and Nordstrom. With Wagner on third and Durham stealing second, freshman Haley Valis' single to right field scored Wagner. Senior Brooke Johnson's three-run homer to center field sealed the deal, scoring Durham and Valis. Game 2 saw the Cougars take a 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to the teamwork of Jessica Valis, freshman Katie Bush, Wagner and Shamblin. The teams remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Durham's double to center scored Kloecker and sophomore Courtney Spittler's single to left field scored Durham. The Cougars closed out the game in the sixth when Valis reached home on a single by Kloecker and Durham scored freshman pinch runner Christa Raley. Sophomore pitcher Angel Shamblin was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week on Monday after her outstanding performance against C-USA opponent Southern Mississippi on Saturday and Sunday. Shamblin went 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA and held her opponents to a .173 batting average during the two starts. She now stands at 144 strikeouts for the season, moving into a tie with Jamie Falco's mark at the No.2 all-time spot in program history. This is the third time Shamblin has received such accolades this season and the fifth time she claimed this award during her Cougar career. The Cougars next take on Grambling State at 1 p.m. today at the Cougar Softball Complex. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu |
